Belmont Athletes Impress for Charitable Cause

by Kristen-Leigh Sheft

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee at Belmont University hosted its second annual Battle of the Bruins Talent Show on Tuesday, January 29th at the Curb Event Center in Nashville. Over 13 varsity athletics teams came together to perform songs and skits for over 700 students and community members in an effort to raise money for the city's local Special Olympics chapter. LEGACY Consulting, PR and Events helped secure celebrity judges for the event, including four-time Pro Bowl selection and retired Tennessee Titans safety, Blaine Bishop, and Disney's former singing, acting, and dancing talent, Tay Barton. Other judges included news anchor Harry Chapman and a Special Olympian.

Bishop, who currently serves as a co-host of 3HL on 104.5 The Zone, called the event one of the most memorable things he has ever experienced.

The acts, judged on creativity, energy, and crowd involvement, performed a variety of medleys, from boy band hits to Beyonce's greatest musical numbers. The women's softball team impressed the panel with a flashback of 2012's most memorable moments while the men's basketball squad drew praise  for its entertaining take on  Family Feud. The baseball team ultimately ran away with the show, however, after successfully defending its 2012 title with a lighthearted performance from the Sound of Music, complete with dancing, singing, and costume changes.
Through the teams' efforts, Belmont was able to raise over $12,000 for the Special Olympics, bringing its two-year total to over $22,000. Many local chapter members were on hand to sing and dance with their favorite athletes, creating a truly inspiring community experience as the crowd cheered alongside.
