Making History: The 2016 Heritage Ball Auction

Written By:  Abby Janis

Every community has a story.  As a community creates traditions, beliefs, and achievements that become woven into its history, the history becomes a heritage, and the heritage becomes a legacy.

LEGACY Consulting, PR & Events was so delighted to work with TheHeritage Foundation of Franklin on the 2016 Heritage Ball Auction. The efforts of everyone who helped raise funds benefited The Heritage Foundation’s mission to “save the places that matter in Williamson County.”

The Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization that exists to protect and preserve the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Franklin and Williamson County. The foundation advocates for and raises funds to preserve historic buildings, sites, and community resources that Franklin has to offer, as well as supports the businesses in the historical district to promote Downtown Franklin. The association also facilitates historic learning opportunities for Williamson County’s public, private, and home school institutions and organizes numerous local festivals and events to further celebrate the Franklin and Williamson County communities.

What location would be better to celebrate the history of Franklin than the former site of the Battle of Franklin? The Ball took place on September 17th at Eastern Flank Battle Park, where guests entered down a long road surrounded by restored battleground. The road served as a historic parade of sorts that truly set the landmark tone of the evening. Guests arrived at the venue, dressed in their finest formal garb, ready for a night of dancing, food, society, and splendor.

One of the highlights of the evening was the silent and live auctions. The Heritage Foundation, LEGACY and the auction committee pulled together a near 300 luxurious items and experiences for their benefit.  From an Alan Jackson autographed Yamaha guitar to an exclusive getaway to the South of France, patrons bid on a number of items that celebrated Williamson County, Franklin, Nashville, and the spirit of these communities. Every corner of the auction tent was stocked full with paintings, jewelry, gift baskets, sports commodities, instruments, home décor, autographed memorabilia and priceless experience packages. Guests promenaded around each table, exploring the spread. The auction itself was facilitated online. When they fell in love with items, the attendees were able to use their mobile devices to place bids through the auction site.

In addition to the silent online auction, LEGACY worked with the Heritage Foundation to produce a live auction component, which offered four lavish, exclusive items. Up for grabs was an incredible five carat diamond, 14kt white gold bracelet from Grogan Jewelers by Lon; a gorgeous four+ karat diamond and platinum 1930’s broach/pendant from Walton’s Antique Estate & Jewelry; a once in alifetime ESPNU Experience package that included a Studio Tour of ESPNU Studios by former Super Bowl Champion and ESPNU sports analyst Kevin Carter; and a six-night escape to the Baja Peninsula in Cabo San Lucas. The attendees thoroughly enjoyed battling for the top bid on these surprise and magnificent items.  The live auction alone raised $28,000.

Another spectacular element of the auction was Roy Laws’ Live Painting. During the Ball, local painter Roy Laws sat at the end tip of the auction procession, crafting a brilliant painting with bold color, subject matter, and emotion. Attendees bid on the opportunity to leave the ball with his live creation.

Overall, both the silent and live auction proved to be a gleaming success. This year’s proceed earnings almost doubled those of last year’s Ball. By the time the auction officially closed, The Heritage Foundation had not only reached their goal of $100,000 raised in the auction alone, but far surpassed it, making it the most successful auction to date.
